Training

The National Center for Safe Routes to School offers trainings to assist communities and states that want to address potential safety concerns along walking and bicycling routes to school and increase the number of children safely traveling to school by foot or bicycle. Trainings offer information and facilitated discussion to generate community-driven actions to build and sustain successful SRTS programs. Current options provided by the National Center for Safe Routes to School include:

Safe Routes to School National Course

The National Course provides a comprehensive overview of the need for SRTS and the strategies available to improve conditions for walking and bicycling to school and encourage more participation in these activities. The course can assist participants in initiating steps that focus on addressing a particular school's needs or a community or state-level comprehensive approach.

Skills for Local Safe Routes to School Program Development

Designed for people who are directly involved in planning and implementing SRTS programs at the community level, this course provides practical approaches, community-tested processes and tools to develop and implement strategies that do not require changes to the physical environment.

Trainings for Engineers and Other Transportation Professionals

While engineers may be participants of the National Course, there are also other trainings designed specifically for their expertise and job responsibilities. The National Center for Safe Routes to School partners with the Institute of Transportation Engineers to offer web-based trainings. See http://www.ite.org/education/webinars.asp for current offerings.

SRTS Coaching Action Network Webinars

The National Center for Safe Routes to School partners with America Walks to offer a series of SRTS-related Webinars. The Safe Routes Coaching Action Network Webinars are designed to educate individuals and organizations on topics that will assist with successful outreach efforts.

Training is also available from other organizations. Read more on other pedestrian and bicycle-related training options from leading organizations.

As a part of its role to support the Federal Safe Routes to School program, NCSRTS has committed to providing a free training or promotional service to each State SRTS Program at the request of the State SRTS Coordinator. If you have additional questions about training, contact the National Center for Safe Routes to School at 1-866-610-SRTS or send an email to Nancy Pullen-Seufert.
