You can share your Safe Routes to School program's activities by submitting your own case study information using the fields below.

The following is a basic outline and questions to help in organizing your information and to help us maintain a consistent look across all the case studies submitted. The National Center for Safe Routes to School retains the right to use this information as reported or edit the information and determine what content will be posted on its website. As the case study is finalized staff may contact the submitter for details of clarification.

Case Study Content

Background

The background section is used to briefly "set the scene" of the story of the program. It is useful to give a short description of the town or area in which the program takes place as well as the unique problem that the site/town/group is faced with, in regards to safe routes, pedestrian safety, and other aspects of getting to and from school safely. Some questions that can be answered in this section are:

What is the name of the school(s)?
What city and state is it in?
What type of area-rural, urban, suburban?
What was the motivating factor or situation that prompted change, or what made you want to change the situation?

Details

Within the detail section, describe your Safe Routes to School program or event(s) chronologically from beginning through the present. The following questions can help you frame your discussion:

When and how did the program begin? Give specific dates if possible. How has the program grown? Is your program or activity officially recognized by the school?
What does the program entail? Which E's activities or strategies (Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Encouragement, Evaluation) are included?
What grade students are targeted by the program?
Who is involved in organizing and carrying out the program? What individuals and/or agencies were involved? Has there been collaboration between the school and the local government?
Are activities single day events or are the activities ongoing?
To whom or to what agency (your state Department of Transportation's SRTS program, local government etc) did your group apply for funding? How much funding did you receive for implementing infrastructure improvements and/or non-infrastructure activities?
Other noteworthy items to mention about the program?

Results

The results section is used to discuss the successes and lessons learned from the planning and/or carrying out of the event or program. If you have numbers or data, please consider sharing them in this section. A few questions to consider include:

How did the activity go in terms of number of participants?
Were your SRTS plans carried out as intended?
Have changes to the infrastructure been implemented?
Have pedestrians, bicyclists and motorist behaviors changed?
What were unforeseen successes or barriers encountered?
Are there future plans for the program and/or the possibility of applying for new or renewed funding?
